General information
This unit began in 1996 and is closely associated with the Paediatric
Association of PNG. Covering a national child population of 1.92 million
there are currently 40 respondents, including all paediatricians in the
country and some general physicians in the more remote areas. Response
rate for the year to June 199 was 78.6%. Since 1996 surveillance has
been undertaken for 11 conditions.
Since 2001 the unit has been suspended because of finacial and other difficulties. The Netherlands Surveillance Unit is in contact with clinicians in PNG and it is hoped the unit can be relaunched in the near future.
Conditions studied
Studies undertaken:
acute flaccid paralysis, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, congenital
hypothyroidism, neurologic endemic cretinism, renal tubular acidosis,
sub-acute sclerosing panencephalitis, necrotising enterocolitis and
HIV/AIDS.
It is hoped that this year will see the commencement of nephrotic syndrome.
