Response rate for the year to June 199 was 78.6%. Since 1996 surveillance has been undertaken for 11 conditions.

Since 2001 the unit has been suspended because of finacial and other difficulties. The Netherlands Surveillance Unit is in contact with clinicians in PNG and it is hoped the unit can be relaunched in the near future.

acute flaccid paralysis, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, congenital hypothyroidism, neurologic endemic cretinism, renal tubular acidosis, sub-acute sclerosing panencephalitis, necrotising enterocolitis and HIV/AIDS.

It is hoped that this year will see the commencement of nephrotic syndrome.
