Netherlands Paediatric Surveillance Unit (NSCK)

Background

Every month around 1,300 paediatricians in general and university hospitals receive an e-mail with a request to report having seen any cases the current surveillance studies.

The surveillance studies are used for diverse purposes and have led to many peer reviewed publications and have informed changes in policy. A concrete example of the usefulness of the DPSU was the monitoring of vitamin K deficiency bleeding before and after a recent increase in vitamin K supplementation for breastfed infants. The purpose of the increase was to obtain a similar effectiveness as in Denmark, where this has already been implemented. The DPSU surveillance shows the number of infants with a vitamin K deficiency bleeding with the current dose seems significantly lower.
